How Össur, with the help of Germa, revolutionized care for amputees

Over 20 years ago, orthopedic engineer Anton Johannesson faced a challenge – how could care for amputee patients be improved?
Traditionally, plaster was used to stabilize the stump after an amputation, but it was both impractical and, if avoided, could delay rehabilitation. Anton, who was working at the hospital in Kristianstad at the time, saw an opportunity for change and began developing a better postoperative solution.
Inspired by vacuum mattresses used to stabilize patients in ambulances, Anton reached out to Germa. With their experience in developing advanced plastic products for healthcare, Germa took on the challenge. Together, they created an innovative dressing based on Germa’s technology that replaced the traditional plaster. The sleeve countered swelling, reduced pain, and as part of the new postoperative solution, significantly shortened the rehabilitation time.
Thanks to this solution, care for amputee patients has radically changed. The product is now used in countries such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the USA, and the UK, and it has improved the lives of thousands of patients worldwide. The successful collaboration between Össur and Germa is proof of how innovation and partnership can transform healthcare and create better conditions for patients.
